In the Limelight: Dori Smith, RD By Lisa Garback MS, RD, CDN, Assistant Newsletter Editor
This issue of the Network highlights Dori Smith, a recently elected member to our DPG’s Nominating Committee.
Dori’s passion for nutrition was fueled by a family who always considered whole foods superior to processed foods. They preferred to use nutrition as a medicinal option to traditional medical treatment.
Dori earned her bachelor of science degree in food and dietetics with a minor in chemistry and a certificate in gerontology from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in 1997. Dori then completed her dietetic internship at West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dori grew up around the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center her whole life. Given the incredible amount of community passion for this institution, it was naturally a logical choice of employment. She was first hired as a dietetic technician and subsequently a dietitian. She then assumed the position of Clinical Nutrition Manager in 2003.
Dori chose to become a member of our DPG once she assumed her role as Clinical Nutrition Manager. She felt that the practice group would provide her with specialized technical information that would allow her to be a resource to her staff. Additionally, she wanted to increase her knowledge in the field to better make informed decisions pertaining to the nutrition care process. Dori was fortunate enough to meet some of the practice group’s members at a past American Dietetic Association conference and found them warm and welcoming, further affirming her decision to join.
Dori’s role models include her grandparents and parents. Her grandparents, who lived well into their 90’s, kept their Victory Garden from WWII because it produced better quality produce, both in terms of nutrition and flavor in their opinion. Her parents, who remain extremely active in their 70’s, are strong believers in healthy living and actually practicing what they preach. Dori writes, “They must be doing something right!”
On a personal note, Dori has been married 30 years next June and has a 17 year old daughter. In her spare time, she enjoys dance, particularly ballet. She also takes pleasure in all forms of needlework. Currently Dori is quilting, but will break from large projects to knit.
While Dori does not have any specific advice for our members given she is new to the practice group, she still acknowledges the need to keep learning. She recognizes that our group is an asset. Dori writes, “I have much to learn from them.”
